EU Bans Over 90 Airlines From European Skies

(file photo) (AFP) March 22, 2006 -- The European Union today banned more than 90 airlines from operating in European skies, declaring them unsafe.

The blacklist includes mostly airlines from African nations, as well as the Afghan flagship carrier Ariana and carriers from Kazakhstan (BGB Air, GST Aero Air Company) and Kyrgyzstan (Phoenix Aviation, Reem Air).

The bans are based on criteria such as age and maintenance of aircraft, failure to solve previously identified problems, and bad oversight by regulatory authorities. The ban applies to both passenger and cargo carriers.
