Forty-Two Killed, 54 Survive Plane Crash In Northeast China

At least 42 people are dead but 54 others are reported to have survived the crash of a Chinese passenger jet that was attempting to land in China's far northeast, not far from the border with Russia.

The Henan Airlines plane, a Brazilian-made Embraer ERJ-190, is reported to have broken into two pieces and burst into flames after missing the runway during the attempted landing late on August 24 in heavy fog at the airport in Yichun, in Heilongjiang Province, about 150 kilometers from the Russian border.

The plane had flown from the provincial capital, Harbin.

Chinese reports said all 54 survivors had been taken to hospital for treatment. Officials said the cause of the crash, which is described as the worst in China in more than five years, is under investigation.
